2010 marks the 15th Anniversary of the South African Depression and Anxiety group (SADAG). SADAG is committed to quality counselling, outreach and capacity building work throughout South Africa, and this commitment to promoting mental health was recognized by the World Bank Development Marketplace in 2003 with a substantial grant towards SADAG’s Rural Development Programme.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group also boasts over 180 Support Groups nationwide, and has an extensive referral guide reaching into the most remote regions of the country. Teen Suicide Prevention Week
14th – 21st February 2010

Did you know that 9.5% of all teen deaths are due to suicide? How about that suicide is the second leading cause of death in 15 – 24 year-olds? There are some scary statistics emerging about teen suicide – for example: most adolescent suicides occur after school hours and in the teen’s home, and that most adolescent suicide attempts follow fights with friends or family, and many teens who attempt or commit suicide have an undiagnosed psychiatric disorder, many use alcohol or drugs, be the victims of bullying, or may have recently experienced loss. SADAG is committed to preventing tragic teen suicides, whatever the cause. From the 14th to the 21st February is Teen Suicide Prevention Week and SADAG wants to let parents, teachers, and peers know that we don’t need to let teen stress and depression become a crisis. There are things we can do to help and if we all get involved, we can prevent tragic loss of life. If you would like to book a school talk for learners or staff training on suicide prevention, please contact Emma on (011) 262 6396 as soon as possible.
